Curren$y & Wiz Khalifa – How Fly

The Cheech and Chong of the new class release a brand new mixtape together featuring all new music that the duo recorded together over the past few months. How Fly showcases Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa’s love for the stoned life, but it maybe my favorite music from these two so far. They each have had their own mixtapes in the past (search the site) but together they seem to bring out the best. So break out some big bambu’s, put it in the air and lay back to the fly sounds of Curren$y and Wiz.

Check out Naomi Clarissa's Review on my 'Third Party' Mixtape

After strongly making the statement that there were no other female MCs really doing something for the UK music scene in an article I wrote at the beginning of the year, I was too excited to hear what Kay Young had to offer when I got my hands on her latest mixtape entitled ‘Third Party.‘ I didn’t quite know what to expect, but I can tell you I knew I wouldn’t be and definitely wasn’t disappointed.
Kay brings something so refreshing to the scene. Here is a young woman expressing her thoughts with such flow and style (I would say ’swagger’ but the word just annoys me.) Kay knows her style and appears confidently sure of herself as an artist which is something definitely lacking in many artists these days, including those with chart successes (mentioning no names, I’ll leave that for another blog.)
The mixtape opens with a smooth jazz-influenced beat just to create a mood and follows with ‘On My Grown,’ a statement track which perfectly introduces Kay to her listener, and one which I’m sure many young females will relate to.
Tracks like ‘I is Here/Old First‘ and ‘Kicking It‘ showcase the way in which this lady can ride a beat, and I’m telling you, there is no way you can sit still listening to the rhythm she creates as she flows over these tracks
Her style is insane, true UK hiphop at it’s finest. And she is definitely not afraid to get creative with her sound with tracks like ‘Dough‘ and ‘Count Sheep.’ You’ll hear a range of musical influences from grime to neo-soul which she cleverly fuses together to create the Kay Young sound, and did I mention this was produced in just 14 days.
Lyrically, she’s so relevant and the productions are musically on point with artistically layered vocals bringing the mixtape to a higher level of production, which makes it such a great listen.
Kay is definitely holding it up for the female artists and has come strong with a mixtape that will give you food for thought as well as get your head banging, and in case I somehow forgot to mention, she produced this mixtape in 14 days just as a little challenge to herself. Insane!
So boom, if you still haven’t heard any of Kay Young’s music you need to download the mixtape at the link below and give it a listen now:

Vans of the day 24!

With Jason Jesse at the design helm for this fall/winter Vans Syndicate collection, the skater, gearhead and artist among other trades puts together this SK8-HI model. Featuring an all-leather upper, the usual markings brought on by the stripes are exchanged in favor of a deconstructed stitching method. The back heel also makes room for a deep notch. With the black version seen here, a brown one should also be releasing alongside this style. Available now at Gettry.

AND SOME MORE REVIEWS!!!!!

Just got this new track from DJ/Producer Last Japan. Hailing from London, Last Japan has recruited producer Crispin J Glover and female MC Kay Young to produce a stellar beat. This guy has serious credit too. He has done remixes for some of the top artists in the electro scene such as LaidBack Luke, Diplo, Mumdance, Brodinski, Crystal Fighters, on the labels Kitsune, Southern Fried, and Warner Bros.-- a very impressive list indeed. Now to the songThe break-beat style track is huge. The drums are large and full and the bassline drips in electro goodness for all of the 4+ minute song. Also Miss Kay Young has a great tone to her voice. Similar to Lady Soverign, this girl can spit some dope rhymes that sound great. My favorite part though is the hook/chorus -- in this regard Last Japan has nailed it. Although all she says is "tonight the DJ saved my life," the way she says it along with the beat is so catchy that I find myself repeating it at odd times of the dayDef pick this one up and spin it the next time your out -- People will dance I promise
enjoY!

Also on 'The Culture Of me'

Dirty, rubbery basslines and devastator synths ring in and out of every crevasse in this track, a new joint called "DJ Saved My Life" from Last Japan featuring the immense vocals from young ruffian/upstart electro R&B MC/skateboarder Kay Young (above). Jumping out of the gate like a bullet train riding on vibes of club bangers and monster tracks from yore, Young's grime house raps are consistent, intense and showcase a young talent who's already at the fore of her game backed by the sort of anthemic arrangements that guarantee a fueled-up and filled dancefloor and sweat galore. The production work--helped out by Crispin J Glover from One Little Indian--is destined for the arenas and clubs of the world, so download it, share it and give it to your imminent superstar DJs.

ALSO ON FADER MAGAZINE.....

Kay Young is apparently an egalitarian type of UK MC, since she dedicates Last Japan’s throbbing laser-gun of a 21st Century club track to both “the ravers” and “the poseurs.” But how does one pose at raving? Seems like one of those “she’s a little pregnant” scenarios, but then what do we know, since we have never posed at raving in our lives, ever—it’s always full-bore raving, 24-7, dancefloor or no, forevermore, no fronting. Which is why we can appreciate the immediacy of the fact that the DJ saved Kay’s life “tonight,” right? Also, she skateboards and just released a mixtape.

Look out for a review on Last Japan v Crispin J Glover ft. Kay Young – Dj Saved My Life on NOISE PORN

Last Japan has been a busy boy this month, having just finished a remix of ‘Hey’ for Laidback Luke and Diplo, hes back with a great track ‘Dj Saved My Life’ featuring up and coming London Hip Hop artist Kay Young. This track is nuts! This is a real testament to the production skills of Last Japan and once again i must tip my hat off to him. I Love the cut up vocals at the start of the tune which eventually explode into a torrent of cutting synths and sick lyrics. Normally I would say that I am not a fan of vocal electro but this really works, Kay Young’s vocals really add to the energy of this song and helps take this song to the next level. Kay gives off a real Lady Sovereign vibe; however she has some serious song writing talent(check her MySpace for more of her own work).
Little to say this track has restored my faith in vocal electro!
